about
One of the first two single releases from Carnival Star. This track features guest lead guitar from Liquid Grey.
What others have to say about this track pre-release:
"Glancingly revisits The Sisters Of Mercy before launching off on its own monstrous path & identity, celebrated by mental images of sweat-drenched human pyramids & arms held aloft, bathing in stark white light & dense smoke. This song gives everything and yet leaves you wanting more.
Play loud and repeatedly."
- DJ Cruel Britannia
"Starting with a blast of big synthesizer, My Coreen has a complete rock edge to it with a pinch of Sisters Of Mercy added to it. Well worth a listen or two. Or three...... "
- Mark Sharpley - Fourculture Magazine
Artwork by Natassa D. from her "Distortion" collection.
lyrics
"My Dear Coreen" was all we wrote along the wall,
In the fading, failing light those words became our fall.
We saw decay,
We lost our way home,
We threw the knives you held,
That carved your names across our worlds.
That carved your name,
That carves your shame.
You are,
Oh you are,
Just a dream,
My Coreen.
You were,
Oh you were,
My queen,
My Coreen.
Oh my Coreen.
Coming home is all we had and never felt the sorrow,
Always hold the thoughts you have and then let them sin tomorrow.
Let them sin tomorrow
Let them sin in sorrow
Oh My Coreen it's all a dream
Oh My Coreen what does it mean
They are,
Oh they are,
Just a scream,
From in our dream.
We are,
Oh we are,
To cleanse my dreams,
My Coreen.
Oh my Coreen.
We're all dreams from a bitter heart,
You are the lust I could never start.
Our dying worlds should have walked away,
Coreen and I should have never stayed.

I like the subtle way in which the tracks connect to the album cover, making this resting maiden the center point — calm in the midst of storm. (Just my interpretation maybe but the cover gives extra depth to the music... a softer undertone). The image reminds me of ‘Annunciation’ by Dante G. Rossetti used in ‘Adrenaline’ music video.
‘Smoke and Mirrors’ puts me at peace with big disappointments — a bittersweet musical potion.

Swirling goth-rock from the big voice behind '90s outfit Sunshine Blind, featuring a who's-who of dark underground denizens. Bandcamp New & Notable Mar 31, 2020
As the name implies, there’s something wonderfully spooky about this Philly band—shoegaze with a haunting undercurrent. Bandcamp New & Notable Feb 27, 2023
I'm at a lack of words when it comes to expressing my love for this album. It's a masterpiece by every means of the word. Each song flows beautifully into the next, the lyrics are absolutely mystifying, as well as the voices that sing them, the instruments create a symbiotic marvel to listen to. All of these factors together make for a astronomical listening experience. Mae
